I think there may be a weight trade (a little heavier? Although it is CERTAIBNLY worth investigating -- uni's on top and bottom wrapped in 2 oz to protect and hold to gether and work your way up from there...

The problem I see with that method is that although the rods are super strong, they ate also very flexible. You might need to add some structure to stiffen them somehow.
