Archaeopteryx and canard 2 FL

Post by Brett »

I came across this video http://videoportal.sf.tv/video?id=5f69d ... 8e64c77902.

It has some great shots of the archaeopteryx - but has a surprise section on the canard 2FL at the end - the only video I have ever seen of it in flight. I'm very interested in this wing and tried to buy one back in the early 80s but it was withdrawn for sale following an accident.

Interestingly the canard 2FL got 2 points better glider than the Archaeopteryx that came decades later.

Does anybody have any idea how to capture the video? I usually find the file in the cache (opera browser), save and convert but these guys have figured how to hide the file from the cache. Downlaoder like youtube downloader don't work either.

I had to remove the trailing period to get the link to work.

Something weird is going on. I clipped the link and it still didn't work. So I went back to the home page, put archaeopteryx in search and it took me straight to the link, then the video came up just fine.

The direct link was exactly the same. http://videoportal.sf.tv/video?id=5f69d ... 8e64c77902

So it seems you can only link to the video through the home page. http://videoportal.sf.tv/ and it must have the backslash or you get an illegal error message.

Once you've been to the site, you can go back later an the link will work- so it must place a cookie you need for the direct link to work. All the time an energy these guy go to to stop you simply viewing the video amazes me. I can't imagine why capturing the video would be such a problem for them. You can't even watch the video twice without reloading.

Those are all forward slashes. Backslashes lean the other way.

Other odd craft with canards here:

Was the best L/D for the 2FL truely 35:1? If so, this would match the best glide ratio of the LightHawk.

The sink rate of the 2FL was more in line with the modern CBRW's, however, but there would be ways to improve that on a modern version (weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements).

I have seen testflights of the Canard 2FL in 1977 on the Wasserkuppe. This year, a Lilienthal Memorial Fly-in took place there.
I was there with my Valkyrie
The Canard 2FL was looking like a futuristic spaceship, compared with other "high performance" hanggliders such as Quicksilver, Fledling or even VJ23....
And it glided like never seen before...

(Hmm, but most spectacular was a flight of a Lilienthal glider from the Wasserkuppe museum...)

I think the pitch control with the pilot on this "slide-board" was the final problem. In smooth air, OK, but ounce nose full down in heavy turbulence there was no way back.....

In the decription inside the pdf file I attached before, it says max glide ratio is 1:31 at 55 km/h.

I wouldn't like a canard unless it was mounted up overhead, out of my usual field of view.
My real name is Steve Corbin, and I approve this message, for now anyway
